My pair bantam did not produce any chick

Dozen years ago, I had a pair of bantam. The bantam is descent of Sebrught Bantam. The breeder cross the Sebrught with the local or native bantam. I do not know whether tey used Sebrught Rosters or Sebrught Hen. 

The rosters is so handsome with yellow golden color . There are sickle tail feather that different to the Sebrught. All of Sebrught has no sickle feather. Less than a month , the whetaen with white spot died. I am very sad at the time. 

Few month later , I bought white bantam hen

 This hen ia older than the rosters. I hope the hen lays so many eggs. Later the hen lays egg but the roster eat the egg and also the hen. My uncle said that the chicken live in limited space. My uncle who also barber is an experienced chicken breeder. He risen so many chicken especially game chicken. Yes , I just have limited spaces that is not appropriate with the chicken. In free range, he can jump and fly. My rosters has ability to fly too. After month, he never fly again in my house. 

Beside, the space, there are some reason the chicken do not produce the chicken though it's still lays some eggs. The younger rosters that is inexperienced in mating also cannot fertilize the egg. The owner should wait patiently untuk the chicken grow. Is suspected my rosters was young. I estimate the age is half year. Some literature said that the rosters should at least age a year. 

The problem is also insufficient nutrient. Feeding them with bad qualityor low quality chicken feed make your chicken difficulty lay eggs. Moreover, the chicken live in small spaces. They cannot finding any food such as insectz grass, or weed. 

Mugellese or Muginesse Chicken from Italy

 

Mugellese or Muginesse is a chicken from Italia It come from North Eastern Florence. The natural breed of the chicken its unknown. Either Roster or hen weighs below one kilogram or two pounds. The weighs approximately 0,8 (1,8 lb) for the roster and 0,7 kilogram (1,5 lb) from rosters. This is small chicken breed that we know as bantam.

Though the chicken small, the roster is aggressive to another roster. That is why you do not have to put another roster is a coop of the chicken. The hen is good sitters and ivory white chicken egg. It good to your backyard.

The chicken colour is wheaten or black breasted red while the female is wheaten colour.  The skin is white and the leg are pale blue.

The chicken is dual purpose chicken. You can get either fresh meat or egg.

Some Chicken can fly too

 I have risen a pair of bantam. The variety of bantam is a cross of golden Sebright and Java Bantam. I was pretty sure the chicken is not pure Sebright breed because it's a golden color sickle tail that we can puns at pure Sebright bantam.

The roster can fly for five meters. When the sales showed me the chicken , he jump but he did not go far away. He is nervous with the hand. Actually I just want to buy a silver duckwing but I have not found any chickens my aunt choose the Sebright breed with nice rose comb there are three layer of the rose comb .

I love the chicken. The hen is beautiful with the pearl brown on colors I said pearl because her plumage color there is white spot on brown feather. I thought the hen is Java Bantam too.

The chicken is long enough in my raising or around three years.   the hen leave first is suspect the chicken is snot. This is the picture of my chicken

Creeper is not a bantam

I have ever watched a short leg chicken but the it has long tail and the body is slender. The performance is similar to land race chicken. We can distinguish the chicken from it is leg. Although the chicken is almost similar to common chicken but the short leg is similar to bantam chickens. 

This could happen on any chicken. The creeper come from gene. The parent or the ancestor may inherent the chicken. In my opinion the creeper is not attractive. They have common body but the leg is shorter than common chicken. 

I have some picture that i believe a creeper too. I do not know whether the chicken is a bantam cross. The chicken si very nice the roster color is almost white.

More About Silkie Bantam

The Article that i have written years ago, told about the silkie Bantam. I want to share more stories about Silke Bantam that is different to other Bantam. The Silkie has attractive soft plumage.The famous color of silkie is white but you can also find buff and black. Some Silkiealso has black skin that is similiar to Java Chicken. In China, people cook the chicken soup from the black meat. The chef uses various spicy to create the delicious soup.

Red Face Crested White Silkie

The Silkie is an Ancestor of Serama. The Malaysian serama breeder crossed the Silkie to various chicken such as bantam, and   Modern Game. Some Serama chicken has soft plumage like Silkie too.

The chicken comes from Chinese. Chinese people have raised for hundred years. They raise the bird as th utilize chicken that is has good eggs and meat. The silkie lays so much egg in a year. They can ays 250 eggs that is similar to the leghorn chicken. The chicken it the layer rather than a show bird. The chicken go broody unlike the chicken layer. They can also hatch s much eggs in a flock. The hen is a good sitter that ca raise the chicken until grow. 

The chicken is good for yur pets because you can hand it ad they are tame. They are good for your backyard too. 

Blue Face Crested White Silkie

The chicken face is red but you can also some silkie with blue face Blue face in Silkie doe not mean a diseases. The Silkie has blue comb too. The comb is rose comb like sebright bantam.

The chicken comes from Chinese, an the Italian adventurer Marco polo brought the chicken to Italia so the chicken spread to the world.

The Silke has five toes unlike common chicken. Some chicken has plumage on the feet but some are nt.

The Silkie also has grey and blue in color. Today we can also found some  color variants that is developed by the breeders. 

The Large and Small bantam

In my country, Indonesia, the pet sellers divide the Bantam into two kinds: Large bantam and small bantam. The large are named for the bantam that has larger body than the small. Either the large or the large weigh is not more than one kilogram. I think the large size is similar to silkie bantam or Poland; while the small size is same as Javanese bantam or Japanese bantam. Some small bantam size is almost similar to Serama.

The small bantam is more expensive than the large. People raise the small because it is simple and more beauty. People said that the small is the pure bantam; meanwhile the large must be a bantam descendent. Some chicken lover crosses the bantam to others chicken such as broiler or local chicken. I have written some years ago about Japanese Bantam that bears the longer shank legs chicken. Around a quarter or 25% of the Japanese descendant has longer shank. The descendent is higher than the parents. The performance is not good as the parent. I love the Small because it is fun and I do not have to feed them with more chicken feed. I can also save the chicken feed. The small also need small space, we just need small coops or pen. We can breed the small at small space. The way of walk bantam is funny. Meanwhile the larger is also good too. The large must provide more meat than the small. It is not wrong to eat the bantam chicken because the meat is not different to other chicken. We can raise the large at the backyard as the meat reserves. I do not know what the standardization for the Indonesia Bantam is because we have no standardization poultry association in our country, not like United States or Great Britain. United States has a standard for the chicken bantam. The weigh mature chicken is not more than one kilogram. The wing is angle down, touching the land or floor. The size is small than the common chicken. Either United States or Great Britain does not categorize into large or small. United states just recognize real bantam or unreal bantam. Real bantam is the bantam that has no other varieties; while the bantam is derivation from the standard chicken. The breeder select the bantam from the standard chicken that the characters is almost similar unless its size.

Pekin Bantem The True Bantam From Beijing

It is a true or realy bantam chicken that comes from Beijing. The British Army brought the Chicken from China at the second Opium War and give it to the Queen Victoria who lead United Kingdom at the time. This is an interesting bantam and you can raise at your backyard. The are tame and they are prolific too. the hen are good sitter and very attentive to its chick, while the rooster could be aggressive when other chicken enter its region. The chicken have round shape body with the thick plumage. This chicken is soft feather chciken. 

there are some various of the full feather shank buff, birchen, coulmbian, barred, cucko, lavender, mottled, partridge, silver partridge and white. The bantam also named as Cochin Bantam. West people said that Cochin is Shanghai. 

This chicken is small. Thee roster wieghs 680 gram , while the hen weighs 570 gram. 

The Blue Silkie Chicken - Rarely color Silkie Chicken

Silkie Chicken is a famous chicken breed with its soft-fur like feathers. The blue silkie is the rare color among silkie chicken. We are difficult to find the unique blue color. The original silkie chicken color is white. The mutation in silkie cause the chicken color increases. Now he silkie are available in red, buff, black, gray, and silver.
Some breeders cross the black and white silkie Bantam to produce Blue Silkie. Beside the blue, the crossing result white, black, and grey.
The blue has five toes; whereas, most chicken have only four toes. Some have feather in legs and some others not. Like other bantam, the blue has short legs. The legs are black in color. The head is glossy back. It has unique blue red comb that is also called top knot. Only the male has top knot. The female comb is smaller than the male.
The skin under the feather is dark blue. People often said the skin of the chicken is black. The meat of the chicken is also black. The bone is also dark blue, appearing black. Due its black bone, it is also called black bone chicken.
The blue is also a docile pet like the white. It is good as pet. The chicken will not mad if you hand them. It is an easy handed chicken. The female is a good brooder, meaning the female keep the eggs. The female often keep other eggs in heir nest so you can place other eggs in the blue’s nest.

How to hatch Serama eggs: It is difficult to hatch Serama’s eggs

My friend said that he raise so many chickens. He has narrow flock at the roof. Actually his father mind with his small farms. He raise ornamental chicken only due it is more profitable than raising common chicken such as broiler, landrace chicken, or layer chicken. The price of ornamental chicken is ten time or more common chicken. That is why my friend love to raise the ornamental.
Rasing the Serama is not easy as I think. I thought i is very simple. This small chicken just need fewer food or space. The obstacles in Serama Breeding is the eggs. A Serama hen can lays maximum only five eggs a season. Some hen also cannot hatch the eggs. To overcome the problem, a hobbyist must hatch the eggs with small incubator machine.I just need 21 days until the egg hatch. Certainly you should raise the chicken until mature. You cannot return back the chicken to is parent because the parent did not hatch it.
You can also use other bantam to hatch the Serama. Some bantam can hatch its eggs such as dutch bantam, Japanese Bantam, and other. My friend use pigeon to hatch the Serama. I think we can use the pigeon but we should separate the Serama after hatch immediately.

Long shank bantam

A year ago I walked to a bird market to seek some chicken. I love to walk there because we can see chicken, duck, goose, and others. The bird market is a famous bird market in my hometown.
I saw an old man sit behind the stainless steel cage. He sell some Bantam Chicken and Serama Chicken. I interested the short Serama with rose comb. The color is golden laced in color. It is very small, weighing not more than 500 grams. There is also white serama at its left side. I asked the price of the bantam. He said that the bantam price was $ 200. In my opinion the price was high and I had no money to buy it. I thought the cockerel was cheaper than the cock. The cockerel is black tailed buff but I forget the color of two pullets. I think one of pellet is buff in color, while other pullet is white in color. The cockerel's tail has not yet grown because it was stil young. I dare asked the old man the price. He answered the price is $110.
I notice the chicken that they have longer feet than other bantam. I said to the old man that the chicken has longer shank.

Fortunately, He did not angry. He explained that the tail would grow and the feet would looks short. I did not believe it and I leave the old man with his chicken. I thought the old man cross the bantam to native chicken so the cockerel has longer shank. He must try cheating me.
A few month ago, I read the Japanese bantam chicken article. From the article, I know that the Japanese Bantam descent 25% longer shank bantam, 50 % short shank bantam, and 25% lethal gene. The old man is honest. He did not sale a bantam hybrid but it sold a higher shank bantam. Supposedly, he explained the matter to me so I would not accused him as cheater.
Though the old man honest but people do not like longer shank bantam. The Chicken performance is not beautiful as real bantam is. The price must be cheaper than the short bantam.
I think the Japanese still has the red jungle fowl that is higher than it. If we cross the longer shank with longer shank we may establish a new chicken breed that is almost similar to red jungle fowl.

Japanese Bantam : Japanese Aristocrat Pet

Among of all bantam, Japanese Bantam may the most famous Bantam in South East Asia country such Indonesia and Malaysia. A Malaysia Bantam Breeder use the Japanese Bantam to produce the famous Serama Bantam. The Japanese heridate the short leg to Serama.
Some article said that the Japanese origin is Bantam (Banten Province, Indonesia). The Dutch trader introduced the Bantam to the Japanese aristocrat. In Shogun era, only aristocrat Japanese raise the chicken. After the modern era, any people can raise the chicken.
Japanese people also call it Chaebo. Since Japanese cannot pronounce “L" letter the chicken names may Chaebol or Cebol which means "Dwarf". Indonesian people said Cebol for everything that short including people.

A Pair of Black Tail White Chaebo

Since the Chaebo origin is Javanese, I believe the ancestor of the chicken is Red Jungle Fowl (Gallus Gallus).
However, Japan have been success to produce Japanese chicken that is more beautiful than its ancestors. The Indonesian Hobbyist also imported the Chaebo from Japan. We Called it "Katai Jepun". "Katai" is Malay for "Bantam" and "Jepun" is Malay for "Japan".
Japanese Bantam is available in various color such as white, black tail white, black tail buff, buff, and spotted. The white color is most common Japanese. All feather color is white. It is not recommended for lazy people who do not care to the chicken. The black tail white has almost white feather in color except the tail. The black tail is black bug in color. The Black tail Buff is also has black bug tail and buff color majority. The spotted is black with white small spot at the chicken.
The chicken has wide single comb above its head. The beak is medium in size. The legs is white in color and has no feather.
Japanese go broody so it can hatch it own eggs or other bantam eggs. The chicken is also friendly with other people.  That is why people like it very much.
Raising the bantam in your backyard is good to or you can raise it at pen. Due its small size, you do not need a large pen for it.
People raise Chaebo for ornamental only. We cannot eat this tiny chicken that weighs only 510 gram to 610 grams. The eggs is also small like other bantam.
The hen may go broody and good sitter but it bring the lethal gen. A quarter of chicken eggs are lethal means it dies before hatching. Around quarter of Chaebo descendent has longer legs. Do not surprised when you got your bantam chicken is higher than the parent. The Chaebo hen hatch 50% of "normal bantam" which has short leg.

Famous bantam chicken breed

Bantam is a small chicken or dwarf chicken. It is shorter than common chicken. People care this bird not for meat and eggs. It produces few meat and few eggs. They care this bird for ornamental bird, or game bird.
There are some famous bantam breeds, such as:

Japanese Bantam (Chaebo)

It is a famous bantam from Japan. In shogun era, only Japanese aristocrats cared the chicken. It is only 20-30 cm height. The cock weighs 30 oz; while, the hen weighs 22 oz. The color of Chaebo is white, white black tail, buff, and others.

Dutch Bantam (Hollandse Krielsen)

It is originated in Dutch. The Dutch sailor brought the chicken from Java Island. They have many color variation such as partridge, lavender, black, white, grey, and others. It has red single comb. Averagely cocks weigh 550 grams and hens weigh 450 grams.

Silky bantam (Silkie)

Silkie is a bantam from Chinese. The hen can lays up to 250 eggs in a year like a commercial chicken breed. As guest its name, the chicken has soft silky feather. The silky have color variations such as white, black and buff. The white is the famous silky color.

Unlike other chicken, Silkie has blue face and earlobes. Some Silkie has crested. The color of meat is dark blue. Some people said the meat could cure some diseases. I think it is just a myth.

Sebright bantam

It was developed in England by Sir John Saunders Sebright. They have two color variation silver and golden. The cock has big red rose comb. Unlike other chicken, the cock has short tail that is similar to the hen tail. The sexual difference of the bird is the comb. The cock has bigger comb than the hen. The males weigh 22 0z (625 gram) in average; while, the females weigh 20 oz (570 g)


Belgian bantam

It is a unique bantam breed. The thick plumage covers the feet and shanks. As guest its name, this bird origin is Belgian. The bantam has thick feather below the beak or beard. They have many color variation like black, white, blue, gray, mottled, white, calico and others.

Serama Bantam

Serama is a Malaysian hybrid bantam. The ancestor of the chicken is Silkiy Bantam, Malaysian native chicken and Japanese Bantam. The bantam is the shortest chicken in the world. It weighs less than 500 gram. The price is very expensive. The price could reach thousand dollars. They have color variation such as partridge, buff, black, calico, gray and others.

The types of Chicken Crow

What do you like from the chicken? Perhaps you like the color of feather that shining and beautiful. Some people also love the brave of the chicken. Everybody has different reason for loving the chicken.
In my opinion, I love the crow of chicken beside its meat and eggs. I love the sound of crow that wakes me at early morning. A lazy people may hate the crow and they will throw the shoes to the chicken.
Most rosters crow at early morning. Sometimes they crows at the afternoon too. Each chicken breed has different crow. Some chicken has long crow but some others has short crow. In my country, there is a chicken that crow like a people laughs. You must be surprised with the chicken. Here are the types of chicken crow:

1. The long crower
The chicken can crow longer than common chicken. In my country, Pelung Chicken can crow longer and louder. There is also long Crower from Czech

2. The Common Crower
It crows like common chicken for example, Rhode Island Red, Red Jungle Red, Bangkok Chicken, Malaysia Chicken, Vietnam chicken, Indonesia Chicken, Java, and so much. The sound is not special like the long crower.

3. Short Crower
Most Bantam crow short. In my opinion, the Bantam crows like necked chicken. Perhaps, its short body influence the duration of crowing.

4. Laughing Crower
Perhaps Only Indonesia that has laughing crower. The crow is horrible if you hear at the night. You may think the crowing is a ghost. There three types of the laughing crow, such as, popular crow, dangdut (Indonesia traditional genre song) crow, and slow dangdut.

The Roosters will began to crow at six month. It also sign that the cockerel grows up to mature. Sometimes a hen also can crow but the sound is weak.

Bantam Cochin : A Chinese Bantam

When I look this chicken, It reminds me with Elvis Presley's pant which is widen at below legs. The chick also has thick feather in shank and legs. This is an exhibition chicken or ornamental chicken. It is derived from Cochin domesticated chicken. The body is smaller than the common chicken. That is why people call it Bantam Cochin.
Cochin is also called Peking bantam hence with its origin. The British troops introduced as ornamental fowl in 1860s in Britain. There are some exhibition for Cochin bantam in Britain.
The cock weight is one kilogram; meanwhile, the hen is 750 gram. It is has 14 combination color such as white, lavender, golden laced, mottled, red, blue, barred, buff, birchen, partridge and others. There are some variety plumage like frizzle and silky. Most Cochin feather tail does not grow perfect. The comb is red color and single. The hen comb is smaller than the cock. The beak of the chicken is small curve to point.
This chicken is good for your backyard too because it just need small backyard. The bird is easy to care and it is strong enough. This bird is very tame. The hen could produce much eggs to and it can be raised as layer hen. Its egg is light brown color. Some breeder use the bird for mother foster other chicken chick. It because the thick plumage keep the chick from cold weather. The thick plumage is useful for incubating the eggs. If you have any chicken that is not able to incubate eggs, you can put the eggs to the bantam nest. Off course, you should consider the eggs number. Do not put more than twelve eggs in a bantam nest.
If you want care it, you need to provide the chicken pen. The pen should be located far from people reach. Feed them with poultry feed, fresh grass, fruit,scratch,and scrap.

Silky Bantam: The Chinese Bantam Layer

This bantam come from China. It has soft silky feather like hair. Unlike other bantam, its tails is not grow perfect. It is blood red rose comb.The height of silky could reach 20 cm. Its iris is dark brown color. The famous silky bantam color is white but there are black silky bantam and buff silky bantam.

In China, This bird is raised as layer hen. It can produce up to 250 eggs a year. This is the most productive bantam. Silky can hatch the egg well. It is a good mother too.

In my country, some people silky bantam meat can cure some diseases. I think it is just a myth.
Dutch Bantam is the most famous Bantam in the world. The height is only 20 cm. The cock has wide curve tail. The comb is red blood single. It is not more than half kilos weight. The hen is lighter than the cock. Dutch bantam color is various like red partridge, green partridge, gray, black, and others.

Dutch Bantam is originated at Dutch or Holland. Some story said that the Dutch trader imported the bantam from South East Asia. I believe the Dutch trade brought from Java because Java was under Dutch occupation. It is descendant of Gallus Bankiva or red jungle fowl.

It is prolific layer too. A Dutch bantam hen can lay up to 200 eggs per year. The eggs is light brown color which is size is smaller than common chicken.

Sebright Bantam : The England Bantam whose has unique feather

Sebright Bantam is a bantam from Britain. The breeder of the bantam is Sir John Sebright. There are two kind sebright: gold sebright bantam and silver right bantam. It is gold laced and silver laced feather.

It is full breast, V-shaped tail feather, and near vertical wing. Unlike most bantam, Sebright cock has no train tail and saddle feather. Both cock and hen has same plumage. The difference between male and female is the comb. The female  has small pea comb but the male has large pea comb like a crown.

I have cared this bird. It can fly up to 10 meters but it does not run from my pen. The hen lay much eggs but it does not want incubate or hatch the eggs. Therefore, you need other hen to incubate the eggs.

Serama : Smallest bantam in the world

This chicken is domesticated in Malaysia. The breeder crossbreed various bantam like Japanese bantam, silky, and Malayan native chicken. Unfortunately, only few people know the Serama gen composition. Now, the chicken also breed in Thailand and Indonesia. Serama name is taken from Sri Rama, a Hindu God.

Serama is the smallest and shortest chicken in the world. It is less than half kilo or one pound weight. It is less than 20 cm tall. I saw some Serama is less than soda can. the color of the chicken is various such as red partridge, silver partridge, buff, barred, dark blue, and others

It has full breast, near-horizontal wing, horizontal tail feather. The chicken looks so mighty when walk in show. 

Serama is ornamental pet. Malaysia often organize Serama Exhibition. The winner is the smallest beautiful chicken. The shorter, the better. The bantam price that win contest is increasing. Some insane people dare to change their SUV car with the bantam.

This strain is difficult to breed. The hen just lay six eggs. Only 50% eggs can be hatch.

Polish Chicken profile : The crested beautiful chicken

The polish has bizarre performance. It has large crested at the top of head. Some crested cover the chicken eye so they have bad sight. I think this chicken is similar with rocker due to its crested.
Actually this chicken’s origin is not Poland. The origin of the bird is Asia. In 12th centuries, The Mongol invader brought the chicken. I saw that The mongol invader has hat like this chicken crest. This chicken has been developed in Ukraine-Polish border. In 16th centuries, this chicken were distributed to Western Europe, Germany, Dutch, England and Italy.

The chicken is slim and it has thick plumage. The cock weighs 6 pounds; while, the hen weighs 4.5 pound. They have color variation that have been recognized as a breed like golden, silver, white, buff, buff laced, white crested black, and black crested white. They have crested color variation too like white, black and golden. Beside crested, some Polish has also beard or additional feather below the beak. The color of bread is buff, white and black. In front of the crest, there is a small unique V-shape comb like a horn. The feet and the shank has no feather. The shank is white and khaki in color.
Due its unique and beautiful feather, some people raise this chicken as game bird, or ornamental bird. Actually, it is a layer chicken because it can produce much eggs. The hen can lays two white eggs a week. Unfortunately this chicken cannot lays in winter even they come from region where winter occurs. The chicken also cannot hatch the eggs too. You should find another mother to hatch the chicken eggs or you can use incubator machine.

This chicken is docile and tame. You can hold this chicken easily. This chicken is good for your backyard. You may get fresh egg from this chicken everyday.
