The Ancestors of Poland Chicken

 The Poland is not the Red Jungle Fowl descent 

The red jungle Fowl is the father of most chicken in the world. The light Brahma and the small serama are the descent of the red jungle fowl. The soft plumage silkie also descent of jungle fowl. 

I am amazed the Crested Poland. Sometimes i think the Poland has very different crest and small v-shape comb. I think the poland is not the jungle fowl descent. Finaly i know the chicken is not the red jungle fowl's descent. 

I love the chicken. It is various color plumage. I like the laced color like sebright bantam. THe chicken lokks tame and docile. Unfortunately the chicken is not good sitters. 

I still confused what is the ancestors of the Poland. Perhaps the Poland has ancestors that is similar to them.

Long shank bantam

A year ago I walked to a bird market to seek some chicken. I love to walk there because we can see chicken, duck, goose, and others. The bird market is a famous bird market in my hometown.
I saw an old man sit behind the stainless steel cage. He sell some Bantam Chicken and Serama Chicken. I interested the short Serama with rose comb. The color is golden laced in color. It is very small, weighing not more than 500 grams. There is also white serama at its left side. I asked the price of the bantam. He said that the bantam price was $ 200. In my opinion the price was high and I had no money to buy it. I thought the cockerel was cheaper than the cock. The cockerel is black tailed buff but I forget the color of two pullets. I think one of pellet is buff in color, while other pullet is white in color. The cockerel's tail has not yet grown because it was stil young. I dare asked the old man the price. He answered the price is $110.
I notice the chicken that they have longer feet than other bantam. I said to the old man that the chicken has longer shank.

Fortunately, He did not angry. He explained that the tail would grow and the feet would looks short. I did not believe it and I leave the old man with his chicken. I thought the old man cross the bantam to native chicken so the cockerel has longer shank. He must try cheating me.
A few month ago, I read the Japanese bantam chicken article. From the article, I know that the Japanese Bantam descent 25% longer shank bantam, 50 % short shank bantam, and 25% lethal gene. The old man is honest. He did not sale a bantam hybrid but it sold a higher shank bantam. Supposedly, he explained the matter to me so I would not accused him as cheater.
Though the old man honest but people do not like longer shank bantam. The Chicken performance is not beautiful as real bantam is. The price must be cheaper than the short bantam.
I think the Japanese still has the red jungle fowl that is higher than it. If we cross the longer shank with longer shank we may establish a new chicken breed that is almost similar to red jungle fowl.

Rhode Island Red profile

Rhode Island Red is the famous dual purpose chicken. The hen can lay up to 300 eggs a year. The egg color is brown. The cock weight is 4.5 kilogram. Meanwhile the hen is 3. 6 kilogram. It was originated at Massachusetts, Rhode Island, United States. The chicken is developed in 19th century. The parents of the chicken are Malay, Shanghai, Java, and Brown leghorn.

Both cook and hen look fat. The thick plumage covers the yellow skin. The legs and shanks are yellow.It has blood red single comb. Some Rhode Island Red has also the color is buff to red. The cock color is more colorific than the hen. It because the fickle feather shining when sun shine.

It is a descendant of gallus bankiva or red jungle fowl. The Rhode Island Red also has similar characteristics of gallus bankiva like single comb, and saddle feather color.

This is the most successful dual chicken breed. It is hardy chicken and can lay many eggs. The breeder always developed the chicken to get best chicken which has produce more meat and eggs.

The domesticated process increase the ancestor quality

For more than ten thousand year, people have risen the chicken. Today, we can find hundreds strain of chicken which have different characteristics. Some chicken has different character to their ancestors, Gallus gallus bankiva or red jungle fowl but some domesticated still has the ancestors character like its feather, performance, or size.

In my country, people care Sumatra native chicken. American breed association named it Sumatra Chicken. The performance is similar with red jungle fowl but the Sumatra is heavier than the ancestors. It cannot fly high as the ancestors. The native Sumatra can lay up to 16 eggs; on the other hand, the red jungle fowl lay only seven eggs.

Some domesticated is heavier than the ancestors. For example Rhode Island red that is 4.5 kg weight or  four to five times the ancestors weight. It is because they do not have to fly again. People also feed the chicken with high quality food.

The feather of domesticated bird is also more beautiful than the ancestor. There are various kind of feather shape i.e. frizzle, silky, featherless. and others. The color of feather is not only red partridge. The domesticated have many color variations such as, black, white, calico, green partridge, buff, black green, and others.

In people's hand, the chicken is more productive than the ancestors. A red jungle fowl can lay up to 50 eggs in a year in forest but a domesticated can lay up to 300 eggs in a year.

The increasing quality caused by selecting process for more than thousands year. People tend to care the best breed whose has beautiful feather, nice song, prolific, short body, weight, and other.
