Bantam is small miniature chicken that is also ornamental chicken. People raise this bird for fan. Some people also care this bird for meat. Raising this bird is easy because you need small pen and few chicken feed. There are some bantam various. Perhaps you want to raise it.

Japanese Bantam is a beautiful bantam from Japanese, According to wikipedia, this bantam origin is Java Island, Indonesia. A dutch trader brought the bantam to Japan as a gift. Japanese Bantam is also called Chabao. It words similar with cebol that is mean dwarf.

After hundred years in Japan, This strain become famous as Japanese chicken. It is the Japanese aristocrat pets. Indonesia people called it Katai Jepun. They do not know that the origin of the bantam is their country.

The bantam is one kilos weight for cock and six ons for the female. It is 15-20 cm tall. The head is proportional with its body. It has near-horizontal tail feather, wing, full breast, and red blood single comb. Japanese bantam has so many various color like white, white-black tail, buff, black red, Buff-black tail, buff-white, and others.

Green Java Peacock : The East Java mascot bird

Java Green Peacock (Pavo Muticuus) is a beautiful bird in the world. They are found in East Java Savanna. Green peacock is also found in Myanmar and Malaysia Peninsula. Java Peacock has beautiful green light plumage and it is different to Indian and Chinese peacock which has blue plumage.

The Java has longer neck, longer legs, longer crest and slender body than other peacock. Peacock use its long shanks to expel the predator like snake.The color of the bird is green hence with its name; meanwhile the female color is dull green-grey. The neck plumage is golden green. The train tail is very beautiful. The cock exhibit or fan the train tail like fan to attract the hen. The train pattern like green eyes. That is why only beautiful color male can get the hen.

If you want care it, you need to build a large pen. The bird need at least 400 square feet. Provide them with shelter that keep them from rain and sunny.

The male length is 3 meters including train plumage, weight five kg (11 lbs). The female is 1.1 meter, weight three kilogram (6 lbs). The hen can lay 4-8 eggs a season. Only the hen incubate the eggs for 26 days.

The male often repeated a loud call ki-wao; meanwhile the female has call aow-aa.

They are found in savanna. It lives with Java wild bull (Boss Javanicus). It finds food at it like grain, grass edge, fruit, and insect.

This species is endangered species and protected by Indonesian law because the number of species is becoming rarely. The IUCN also lists this species including as vulnerable to extinction. Indonesian government built Meru Betiri National Park In East Java for Peacock and wild bull habitat. We can watch the bird play in savanna. People hunts this bird for meat and beautiful plumage. The plumage is traded at market.

Rarely we find the breeder raise the bird in Indonesia. It because the fowl is so expensive. On the other hand, American is success to breed this bird.

Kedu Chicken: The ancestor of Java Chicken

Some people relate Kedu Chicken with black magic. They think it can cure some diseases especially mystic disease. This chicken is originated in Kedu Municipal, Central Java, Indonesia. Most Kedu Chicken is black but they have other color variation like multi color and white. Only few chicken whose has multi color and white color. 

The cock height could reach to 60 cm. It is 2.5 kg weight. The hen is lighter. The black dominate the color of bird from beak to nail. The meat, blood, tongue, skin are black in color. The cock has long flowing tail. It has black single comb.

I have ever eaten a Kedu chicken whose has black meat and bone. The taste is not different with common chicken. My mother fried it with special spicy sauce.But most people do not like it because the color of meat is not disgusting.

More black, more expensive. In, my country people dare to buy the cock for hundreds dollar.Unfortunately, this chicken is not good for meat due to its meat color. Although the chicken is black but the eggs color is white. In Indonesia, This is the only strain that lay white eggs while most native Indonesian chicken laid light brown eggs. The chicken is prolific too. It can lay up to 251 eggs a year. Due to egg production, this chicken is suitable for layer chicken. 

To get the pure black color, the breeder breed the black chicken with black chicken or half-black chicken. The descendant will have the pure black color.

In United States, There is Java breed that is almost similar to Kedu Chicken. I guess US breeder has used Kedu Chicken as the parent. Java differs from the weight. Java is heavier than Kedu. Java is 4.3 kilogram weight. It is two times than Kedu Chicken.
